CAMPAIGN BUZZ
A SCHOOL BOARD THAT IS CLOSER TO COMMUNITY
Providence voters overwhelmingly decided last year to change the makeup of the city's School Board and elect five of its members. Previously, all were appointed by the mayor.
After five are elected, Mayor Brett Smiley will appoint five to complete the 10-member School Board. The races are nonpartisan, so these candidates will appear on the November 5th ballot without party designations next to their names.
The five elected members will represent a region that encompasses three of the city’s 15 wards.

Kobi J. Dennis, for example, is seeking to represent Region 2 on the School Board. Region 2 is much of the north side of Providence - wards 4, 5, and 14. Ty’Relle Stephens, on the other hand, is seeking to represent Region 5. Corey Jones is vying to represent Region 1 and Night Jean Muhingabo is running for Region 4.
There are roughly 19,500 public school students in Providence, many of whom are of color. Having these four Black men on the School Board together is the representation and advocacy these students and families need and deserve.
